Add Black to your Shopping Cart this Holiday Season
By Shelia M Goss
This Christmas season why not buy books for gifts. Whether the person likes romance, contemporary fiction, mysteries, science fiction or non-fiction, there’s a book out there to fit a variety of tastes. While doing your shopping don’t forget about picking up books by people of color. Many books by African-Americans and other nationalities sometimes go unnoticed unless it’s part of pop culture. Gems can be overlooked simply because you may not be familiar with their works.
How can you help spread the word about books by African-American authors? Simple. Just tell a friend.
- Link to the authors website
- Link directly to the book
- Mention some of the books on your online network–i.e., Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc.
- Discuss alternate books at your book club meetings
- If you have a blog, do link exchanges or guest blog posts.
These are just a few suggestions. Be creative.
I’ll list several books by African-American authors in a variety of genres to get you started:
- Orange, Mint, and Honey by Carleen Brice
- Murder, Mayhem & a Fine Man by Claudia Mair Burney
- A New Kind of Bliss by Bettye Griffin
- Bring on the Blessings by Beverly Jenkins
- Cornered by Brandon Massey
- Sugar by Bernice McFadden
- Feels Like Falling by Michelle McGriff
- The Ideal Wife by Jacqueline Thomas
- Peony’s Daughters by Leceila Turnage
- Harlequin Kimani Romance novels by authors such as Gwyneth Bolton, Gwynne Forster, Michelle Monkou, Celeste Norfleet, etc.
These are just a few of the many good books out there by African-American authors. Happy Holidays & Have fun shopping!

Great article. I am a firm believer of gifting books!
Thank you for visiting. I”m glad you said you believe in giving books as gifts because as an author it looks too self-serving to say I like giving books as gifts. ha ha
thanks for stopping by

That’s the hard part about an article like this. There are so many good authors out there it’s hard to include them all. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a few more names. Appreciate the thought very much.
